Blue Mesa Fishing Report
The week of: April 16th, 2018

Weather conditions: Cold, stormy, windy
Water conditions: 42 degrees, good clarity, low water level and dropping

As usual the spring bite up in Gunnison has been awesome, the weather not so much. If you are willing to endure the challenging conditions you will be rewarded. The Rainbow Trout and particularly Brown Trout action up shallow has been great. Anywhere there are rocks on shore will likely hold Brown Trout that can be tempted with a host of lures including jerkbaits, cranks, jigs, streamers, and spoons. The big Lake Trout are scattered with the unusual winter we had but can be found on shallow flats and structure in the main lake basins. Slow trolling a variety of large lures near the bottom has been most effective but jigging has been productive if you can find a concentration of fish. The Kokanee Salmon numbers are great this year and you can catch a limit trolling the usual salmon gear. Please be carful if you go boating this time of year as storms can roll in at any time. As always practice catch and release with all Lake Trout over 22in and Browns over 20in. Tight lines!
